Planting and Mulching Are Grounds for Sale

If you’re wondering just how important curb appeal is, here’s a statistic that should help you decide how much attention to pay to the front of your home. Curb appeal is more important to 71 percent of home buyers when selecting their next residence, according to a 2013 survey by the National Association of Realtors.

To be fair, we understand that not everyone has $1,000 to pour into their landscaping. We’ve had a lot of luck using mulch with clients that have desperately needed new landscaping. Pull all of those half-dead shrubs and plants up and replace it ALL with mulch. It’s a cheap way to get a neatly landscaped front yard for potential buyers to see.

For those that do have a little extra room to spend on landscaping, mow and edge your grass, trim your shrubs, remove weeds from your flower beds, and tidy up with colorful flowers or plants. Choose plants that match the region in which you live or the style of your home. Be mindful of your neighbors and how they care for their lawns and greenery. Buyers will notice. If your house fits right in and stands out in a positive way, you’ve made it past the first test. On the other hand, if your front lawn is unattended, it could send the message that perhaps they should move on.

Be sure to mulch all around the beds. Mulch not only protects your plants from drying out and inhibits weed growth, a fresh batch of mulch is a landscaping effect that adds unity to select areas and neatness. Like painting the trim of a house, it adds color and contrast and reflects your care and attention. In lieu of digging up the soil to plant, use potted flowers or plants in your bedding areas, plus mulch.

When you’re talking curb appeal, there’s nothing closer to your curb than your front lawn. Tending to your plant areas tends to keep buyers interested.
