Will Burying a St. Joseph Statue Make Your Home Sell Faster?

St. Joseph Statue

According to tradition, burying a statue of St. Joseph, known in modern times as the patron saint of real estate, will help your home sell fast. Although a little quirky (okay, a lot quirky), this practice dates back hundreds of years to 15th Century Europe. Realtors and homeowners are all too happy to call on the patron saint for a little extra help as, according to many believers, it does indeed result in a fast offer on a house. Hey, it can’t hurt.

There is speculation on the best location to bury the statue of the beloved saint. Some say burying it in the wrong spot will end up helping one of your neighbors sell their house before you sell yours. Sellers are also instructed to bury it upside down to make St. Joseph work harder to get out of the ground and on its way to a safe home. Others go on to suggest that the seller resurrect the statue after their home has sold and bring it into their new home as a way to honor and thank him.

St. Joseph is recognized as a skilled craftsman and patron of workers. It was common to pray to him for help selling a house and with other household needs. That could be how the ritual took root. Folklore talks about a cloister of nuns who needed land for convents and how they were encouraged to pray and bury their St. Joseph medals in the ground. It must have worked because the popular real estate ritual survived to this day. At some point, for some unknown reason, statues replaced medals.

The backyard is where most recommend burying the statue. The directions get creative beyond that. Some direct how far in the earth you should bury the statue, how far away from a house, and in what direction. There’s even a lovely prayer many use to top off the ritual. It begins “O, Saint Joseph, you who taught our Lord the carpenter’s trade, and saw to it that he was always properly housed, hear my earnest plea …”

If you would like to give it a go, Google something like “Sell home St. Joseph Statue.” Instructions, the prayer, and a history of how the legend began are plentiful; so are merchants who offer sellers kits, some complete with burial bag and instructions.

Should you put your faith in St. Joseph to sell your home? That’s a personal decision. But consider first believing in yourself and the power of web-based marketing tools and expert resources at ListingDoor to do it quickly and easily.
